Insurance Information

Commissioner of Insurance Jim Donelon is strongly urging consumers to
protect themselves and their property against hurricanes and floods by
purchasing flood insurance. "Currently, only 29 percent of the state's
households have flood insurance. It is imperative that our residents take
action to guard against this risk," Donelon said. Standard homeowners
insurance does not typically cover flood damage, but flood insurance covers
the damage that residents would otherwise have to pay for themselves.

Flood insurance backed by FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
provides home owners, business owners and renters with the best protection
available against flooding. The average flood insurance policy premium is
around $500 a year. However, if your property is located in a low- to
moderate-risk flood zone, you may be eligible for a low-cost Preferred Risk
Policy, which can start as low as $119 a year. Find out about flood risk,
flood insurance, and other important insurance issues in our Insurance
