People interested in the Corps' current and proposed plans to reduce risk in
St. Bernard, New Orleans East, New Orleans Lakefront and on the Westbank
will have a number of opportunities to hear details about projects that will
benefit them this month.



"A number of Corps projects have reached significant milestones this month,"
said Gib Owen, chief of ecological planning and restoration branch. "There
are seven environmental documents available for public review and these
public meetings will touch on our proposed risk reduction plans."



Meetings details follow:

When: Monday, May 11, 2009

Where: St. Bernard Parish Council Chambers

8201 W. Judge Perez Dr., Chalmette, LA 70043

Open House 6:00 p.m. Presentation 7:00 p.m.

The meeting presentation will describe the proposed action which would
improve the Bayou Dupre Control Structure and Chalmette Loop Levee as they
are described in Individual Environmental Reports 8 and 10 which are
currently available for public review. Project managers will also describe
the proposed action for the Caernarvon Floodwall in St. Bernard Parish of
the hurricane system as it is described in IER 10.

The team will also briefly discuss the status of identifying potential
borrow (clay) sources to be used in the hurricane system (IERs 28 and 29).



When: Thursday, May 14, 2009

Where: Church at New Orleans

Open house 6 p.m. Presentation 7 p.m.



The project team will discuss the proposed actions to improve the Citrus
Lakefront Levee and the New Orleans East Levees/Floodwalls from Paris Rd. to
Michoud Canal as they are described in IER 6 and 7 which are currently
available for public review. The team will also briefly discuss the status
of identifying potential borrow (clay) sources to be used in the hurricane
system (IERs 28 and 29).



When: Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Where: St. Dominic's School

6326 Memphis St.. New Orleans, LA 70124

Open House 6:00 p.m. Presentation 7:00 p.m.



The meeting will describe the potential human and environmental impacts of
the proposed locations for the new permanent pump stations and closure
structures at or near the mouths of the 17th St., Orleans Ave. and London
Ave. outfall canals as they are discussed in IER 5 which is currently
available for public review.



When: Thursday, May 28, 2009

Where: Cytec's Tom Call Pavilion

The project team will discuss the proposed plan to connect the Westbank and
Vicinity levee to the Mississippi River levees in St. Charles Parish as it
is discussed in IER 16 which is currently available for public review. The
team will also briefly discuss the status of identifying potential borrow
(clay) sources to be used in the hurricane system (IERs 28 and 29).



Please note, a public meeting originally scheduled for May 19, 2009 at the
Slidell Auditorium has been postponed. It will be rescheduled.



Public meetings are part of the Corps' commitment to meet National
Environmental Policy Act alternative arrangements for environmental
compliance efforts and to provide construction updates on the hurricane
system. Alternative arrangements allow the Corps to expedite the
environmental process required of all federally funded projects while fully
complying with the intent of the NEPA.
