State and federal officials were on hand to mark the occasion. St. Bernard
Parish President Craig Taffaro said he expects the restoration of the
3,000-seat auditorium to be complete in time for Chalmette High School's
graduation ceremony next spring.
The three-story auditorium at 8245 W. Judge Perez Drive has been the site of
numerous dance revues, Mardi Gras balls and community events, the parish
said in a news release.
The civic center was swamped during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The renovations are expected to cost more than $3 million and be covered
mostly by FEMA.
