This might be semantics to most, but not to women.  As Pascoe pointed out,
Sen. John Ensign and Gov. Mark Sanford had "affairs" meaning they were
romanticly and emotionally involved with another woman.  While what Vitter
did has no excuse, let's be clear that paying a prostitute for sex, while
crude, does not constitute a relationship tied to the sex - unlike the
"affair" which often leads to the husband leaving the wife and kids.

Again, not to let Vitter off the hook (sorry, I couldn't resist), but even
my wife admits an "affair" is far worse than being with a hooker.  Whether
you agree or not, in the very least the two are not the same.
