Wetlands restoration around MR-GO to be addressed at meeting in Chalmette

A panel discussion will be held Tuesday in Chalmette to probe the wetlands
restoration process for the area around the now-closed Mississippi
River-Gulf Outlet.

The forum is sponsored by the "MR-GO Must GO" coalition and begins at 6:30
p.m. at the St. Bernard Council on Aging, 8201-A W. Judge Perez Drive.

The Army Corps of Engineers recently shut down the controversial shipping
channel with a rock barrier at Bayou La Loutre. Part of the corps' closure
plan includes restoration of some of the wetlands destroyed by the waterway.

Panelists include Ron Chapman, a Nunez Community College history instructor;
Timothy Doody, president of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection
Authority-East; St. Bernard Parish historian William Hyland; John Lopez of
the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation; William McCartney, coastal zone
management administrator for St. Bernard Parish government; and Greg Miller,
the Corps of Engineers' senior project manager for the MR-GO wetland
restoration study.
