John, I tend to agree that Vitter will in all likelihood win reelection:
the power of incumbency. It's hard to shake someone out of a seat (House or
Senate) once they've been there.

I'm not privy to Melancon's thinking so I don't know why he wants to run for
the Senate. As far as I'm concerned he's done a pretty good job in the
House for the district. But, will there be a 3rd district when they
reapportion and LA loses a seat in the House? I've heard/read that they may
expand the 2nd district and put SBP and other areas in that district. I
**know** they won't do away with the 2nd as that's the majority-minority
district and the AA's will keep that.

FWIW I've never been a fan of Vitters. He's always reminded me of a pious
little prig.

"...Democrats have consistently argued that Vitter is vulnerable for
2010,
in part because of the scandal he faced after the 2007 revelation
that his
name was in the phone records of a Washington, D.C., escort service
associated with prostitution. And Melancon - a leader of the Blue
Dog
Coalition of conservative-leaning House Democrats - provides the
party with
a formidable opponent for Vitter."
