"Bottom line, the taxpayers paid to fly Cheney to town to raise funds
for Vitter and disrupt the entire city in the process.
Don't kid yourself. It happens on both sides."

Jer Responds: I would say that anyone who believes security is bunk is but
"seeing the trees but not the forest" (forest, but for the trees).

At no point in recent years should there be a moment not to protect a
high-ranking official from the scourges of society (especially in a few
unsacred places (like New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and
Atlanta, where so many unnatural disasters happen to people with points of
destruction like assassination, conspiracies, and terrorists, for example).

I would argue that even this current president needs protection from the
pitiful who believe the attempt is worth the effort to society.

To protect is to serve. That's our service to our vice-president who must be
secured and kept as such in any visit, in any part of the world. It's a moot
point to believe because a dignitary supports his favorite political ally
(whatever the occasion) that the official be kept secure. There's no
argument here and I don't care WHO the current administrator is--the
protection is a must.

Where at one time, a president shook hands along the parade route--that
process is past gone. No one, whether Pope, governor or federal government
officials must be exposed to political lunatics as we've seen this past
half-century.

Every penny spent for this security is well-spent and any convenience it
takes to do so must be taken into consideration. It's a small price to pay
when the loss of official, cost of taxpayers due to the death/disablement
and cost of media or other nature of expenditures whenever these "unnatural
disasters" are successful.
