Alarmed by a rise in the level of violence in domestic disturbances in
recent months, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office and the Battered
Women's Shelter will announce a joint effort today to help victims get out
of abusive situations.

Officials with the Sheriff's Office and Battered Women's Shelter, located in
Chalmette, will hold a news conference in Chalmette at 11 a.m. to discuss
the initiative.

The Sheriff's Office has received a grant to assign a full-time deputy to
handle follow-ups to investigations of domestic violence cases and the
Battered Women's Shelter has received a grant to add a counselor for
additional services for victims, the Sheriff's Office said in a news
release.

The grant money is coming from the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement
and will allow for an officer to work full-time on domestic violence cases,
following up on initial investigations and keeping victims up to date on
where prosecution of a case stands.

Officials of the shelter and Chief Deputy James Pohlmann of the Sheriff's
Office will discuss the new efforts during the news conference.

People in need of assistance can call the Battered Women's Shelter at
504.277.3177 or the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office at 504.271.2501.
