A CVS Pharmacy security guard shot and killed a suspected shoplifter
Wednesday night, police said.


It happened at 800 Canal St. just before 8 p.m.

Police said the 62-year-old security guard approached suspected shoplifter,
but the man resisted and began attacking the guard, police said.

During the struggle, the guard fired his gun at the suspect, police said.
The suspected shoplifter was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The security guard was also taken to a hospital and treated for minor
injuries, including lacerations on his face.

The suspected shoplifter's name is being withheld pending the notification
of family members.
