With or without insurance, you are always ultimately responsible for the
hospital bill.

What would usually happen in the case where the provider (hospital in this
case) doesn't take your insurance is they are treated as an out-of-network
provider. The insurance will still pay some of the bill, but it is usually
only 50%.

Anything remaining is yours to deal with and it may not count towards your
deductible.
