RNC CHAIRMAN STATEMENT ON SENATOR NELSON'S DECISION TO SUPPORT
DEMOCRATS' HEALTH CARE PROPOSAL

WASHINGTON - Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele
released the following statement today:

"Yesterday, the Republican National Committee, with the help of former Sen.
Rick Santorum (R-PA), asked pro-life Nebraskans to register their opposition
to the abortion compromise negotiated by Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) and Sen. Ben
Nelson (D-NE).

"Senator Nelson's decision to ignore the concerns of his constituents and
pledge to vote for the Democrats' government-run health care experiment,
which will federally fund abortions, is the definition of an out-of-touch
politician. If Senator Nelson believes his back room deals with Harry Reid
are what Nebraskans want from their politicians - he is completely mistaken.
His decision will now potentially require the citizens of Nebraska to fund
abortions all across America, while also leaving future generations the
responsibility of paying for this nearly $2.5 trillion experiment. For
months, Americans have voiced their opposition to a bill that provides
federal funding for abortions. Senators who vote for the Democrats' bill,
like Ben Nelson, will hear from their constituents at the voting booth in
2010."
