The Port of New Orleans has a team of bridge mechanics who work every day
to inspect and maintain the four Port bridges across the IHNC-St.Claude,
Florida, Almonaster, and Seabrook Railroad Bridge. This includes the bridge
gratings, signal lights, gate arms, electrical and the mechanical machinery.

Damage was found to the bridge roadway grating last week and repair work
started immediately on the worse spots. Overloaded trucks that speed are
causing damage to bridge roadway gratings even more so after Katrina, and
it's
a continual problem on all metro areas bridges, including the interstate and

Causeway.

Although an inconvenience, public safety is a priority and by scheduling
the repairs one lane at a time and not during peak traffic hours helps. DOTD

and the Port try their best to coordinate their repair work as much as
possible,
such as DOTD keeping one lane of Claiborne Bridge open in the same direction
as St. Claude needed to close.
