Chalmette volleyball players receive with local, state honors

With another outstanding season having concluded in which the Owls advanced
to the state tournament for the 21st straight season and included the Owls'
veteran volleyball coach Kelli Plaiscia earn her 500th career win, three
Chalmette High volleyball players achieved several major honors after
another trip to the state volleyball tournament.

Senior setter Carley McInnis was chosen the district's Most Valuable Player
as the team captured a district championship for the 10th time under the
tutelage of the school's only head volleyball coach in Plaiscia.

McInnis was joined by fellow senior and power-hitter Torrie Smith and junior
Haley Smith as a defensive specialist as all-district players.

Plaiscia was awarded the league's Coach of the Year honor.

Torrie Smith gained another outstanding honor as she obtained her first ever
all-metro selection.

On the state level, McInnis and Haley Smith were named first team all-state
Division II players. Smith's honor was bestowed upon her as one of the
state's top libero players (defensive specialist), while McInnis was honored
for setting up her fellow players for kill shots as well as for her strong
serving ability.

McInnis finished her high school career by being selected to play in the
state's all-star volleyball game for the best seniors in the Pelican state,
becoming the third straight Chalmette volleyball player in a three-year span
to have participated in the game - Dana Martin in '07 and Kayla Casbon last
season.

McInnis and Haley Smith join that same Owl pair to be selected as all-state
performers.

McInnis and Torrie Smith have been four-year letter winners in the sport and
McInnis has been a starter for the Owl volleyball team since she was a
freshman.

Haley Smith started as an 8th grader for Plaiscia and will become the only
five-year starter in Chalmette High volleyball history to ever accomplish
that feat by playing in the 2010 season.
