St. Bernard Parish residents should only give cash donations to
well-established national organization to help Haiti earthquake victims

Help for St. Bernard Parish came from all over the world after Hurricane
Katrina, and now our neighbors in Haiti, whose nation is the poorest in our
hemisphere, need help as well.

The earthquake destroyed Port-au-Prince in Haiti just as Katrina devastated
St. Bernard. The quake, the region's strongest in more than 200 years,
killed thousands and left the city without basic services or hospitals to
help the injured. President Obama has pledged a humanitarian and relief
effort

tml> , beginning with American search-and-rescue teams that headed for
Haiti. St. Bernard residents understandably want to help as well. Be smart
about how you help and only send cash donations to well-established
organizations such as the ones being suggested by several media outlets.

The Archdiocese of New Orleans is collecting donations through its Masses
for Catholic Relief Services, the church's international relief
organization. You also can donate directly to other relief efforts,
including:

* Save the Children at savethechildren.org
<http://www.savethechildren.org/> , or call 800.728.3843.

* Doctors Without Borders at doctorswithoutborders.org
<http://doctorswithoutborders.org/> , or call 888.392.0392.

* Mercy Corps at mercycorps.org <http://mercycorps.org/> , or call
888.256.1900.

* American Red Cross at redcross.org <http://www.redcross.org/> , or
call 800.733.2767. You also can text "HAITI" to "90999" to give $10 charged
to your cell phone bill.

The world helped us when we needed it, and volunteers still are here. Give
what you can.
