At the end of the first day of qualifying, only one candidate had filed to
run for the St. Bernard Parish judgeship vacated by convicted former Judge
Wayne Cresap.

Perry Nicosia, a St. Bernard Parish School Board member and practicing St.
Bernard attorney since 1992, was the lone person to qualify Wednesday for
the 34th Judicial District, Division C position. Qualifying ends Friday.

Candidates can sign up at the Clerk of Court's Office at the Parish
Courthouse, 1101 W. St. Bernard Highway, Chalmette, today from 8:30 a.m.
until 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The election is March 27.

Cresap has not been on the bench since last April, and he officially
resigned in October after pleading guilty to a bribery scheme that allowed
inmates to get out of jail without paying bonds.

The Louisiana Supreme Court appointed retired state Appeals Court Judge
Robert Klees to serve in place of Cresap until a new judge is elected.

Sentencing for Cresap and two St. Bernard Parish lawyers who pleaded guilty
along with him, Victor "V.J.'' Dauterive and Nunzio Salvador "Sal''
Cusimano, is scheduled for April 22.
