Calling all Neighborhood Watch, Block Captains, and Concerned Citizens

From: Louisiana Bucket Brigade and the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Emergency Preparedness

Dear Citizens of St. Bernard:

The Office of Emergency Preparedness is offering a special 1.5 day (9 hours) training for St. Bernard citizens in the coming months. At the end of this training you will be a certified Citizen Emergency Responder with a special emphasis on Hazardous Materials.

We recognize that St. Bernard citizens face a high degree of vulnerability to disasters on a day-to-day basis – from hurricanes to land subsidence to chemical accidents. This is an excellent opportunity to get prepared and learn how to effectively safeguard the health and safety of your family and community.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

There are 25 slots available and the training is scheduled for spring 2010. Sign up now, slots are filling fast.
