St. Bernard Parish hangs new banners touting its "Historic Past, Promising
Future"

Five-foot tall, bright blue outdoor banners on light poles paid for by state
grant

Using a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Chalmette Artist
Charlotte Luna, in partnership with St. Bernard Parish President Craig P.
Taffaro, Jr., Melissia O'Neil and Lisa Smith, designed art work that has
been placed on five-foot tall, bright blue outdoor banners that are erected
on light poles on Judge Perez Drive in Arabi and Chalmette.

The banners trumpet the message: "St. Bernard Parish: Historic Past,
Promising Future," which is the slogan the parish adopted in 2008 from
numerous entries submitted by residents. Meraux resident Danny O'Neil's
suggestion was chosen and now welcomes visitors.

"These banners are an effective way to highlight some of St. Bernard's
cultural richness," President Taffaro said. "They are a way to instill pride
in our residents about the good activities and culture we have in our own
backyard and compliment the Celebrate St. Bernard movement."

The $5,000 grant paid for 18 sets of two-piece banners that are being hung
in tandem with each other with unique art work. The banner being erected on
the left side of the light pole includes the St. Bernard Parish logo and the
slogan: "Historic Past, Promising Future." The banner on the right side of
the light pole each has a different message with the corresponding art work
in the background.

The banners were erected by Parish Government team members Fred Baas,
Leonard Augustine, and Mark Owens. The banners celebrate the following
community events: Battle of New Orleans, Art in April, Los Islenos Fiesta,
Crawfish Festival, Sugar Festival, Oyster Festival, Christmas Tour of Homes
and Concert in the Park.

These banners were supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the
Arts as administered by the St. Tammany Commission on Cultural Affairs.
