Bayou Dupre will be closed to all marine traffic and Bayou Bienvenue will be
greatly restricted beginning April 5 as construction continues on the Bayou
Dupre Control Structure, the Army Corps of Engineers said in a news release.

Bayou Dupre will remain closed until summer 2011, the news release said.

Tetra Tech EC, Inc., has a $36.3 million contract to build the new control
structure where Bayou Dupre cuts through the levee as part of the 25-mile
Chalmette Loop flood protection program. The corps said the new control
structure will block storm surges created by a hurricane with a 1 percent
chance of occurring in any year, the so-called 100-year storm.

Meanwhile, a temporary bridge at Bayou Bienvenue, which will allow the corps
to transport equipment and materials for the Bayou Dupre construction, will
require marine restrictions on Bienvenue, the corps said.

Small boats with less than 14 feet of clearance will be able to pass beneath
the temporary bridge without delay, the corps said. But larger vessels
requiring more than 14 feet of clearance will only be able to pass beneath
the bridge four times a day, when the center span is removed.

The passage times at Bayou Bienvenue are 5:30 a.m. to 6 a.m.; 11 a.m. to
11:30 a.m.; 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The corps news release said those times might be adjusted later.
