Metairie man dies after Chalmette motorcycle crash

A Metairie man died Sunday night after crashing his motorcycle in Chalmette,
authorities said.

Michael Garletied, 46, was driving his motorcycle eastbound on West St.
Bernard Highway near its intersection with Old Hickory Avenue when he struck
a curb and lost control of the motorcycle, according to a news release from
the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said Garletied was wearing a helmet, but that it was
not "an approved safety helmet.'' He sustained head injuries in the crash
and died on the way to the hospital, the Sheriff's Office said.

There was no evidence to suggest Garletied was impaired, but the results of
standard toxicology tests are pending, the Sheriff's Office said.
