Large Booming Effort at the MRGO

Catholic Charities Service Center Has Opened at St. Bernard Catholic Church

 

Oil response efforts continued in St. Bernard Parish, with three large boats
deployed in direct support of BP's Oil Spill Response Organization
activities to boom at the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet. Crews deployed
9,000 feet of hard boom at that site today.

 

Additionally, 33 teams on boats and three aerial teams, including personnel
from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality as well as U.S. Fish
and Wildlife and Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries conducted a state-wide to
find and rescue oiled birds and wildlife. To date, 30 oiled birds have been
recovered. Four are being rehabilitated, four have been released, and 22
were found deceased.

 

Catholic Charities has opened a satellite operations facility at the St.
Bernard Catholic Church at 2805 Bayou Road. Representatives will be offering
case management and crisis counseling. The services will be available Monday
through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

 

Oil response training classes, which are for St. Bernard Parish residents
only, will be held this week. They are scheduled Monday through Friday at
7:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. daily. It is also still available to
those fishermen enrolled in the Vessels of Opportunity Program who have not
finished the training. The fishermen will have a priority in seating for
these classes. The training is taking place in the Frederick J. Sigur Civic
Auditorium Grand Ballroom located at 8245 W. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette.
There is limited seating of 200 for each class, and arrivals to the classes
will be accommodated on a first come first serve basis.
