Free Pet food for St. Bernard pet owners affected by oil spill

Free pet food will be available for those St. Bernard pet owners suffering
economic hardship as the result of the oil spill. The Humane Society of the
United States coordinated the donation of dog and cat food from Mars Petcare
U.S. and dog food from The Humane Choice Company, the maker of The HSUS' dog
food.

Beginning on Tuesday, June 15, the pet food will be distributed at the old
Animal Shelter at 115 W. Agriculture Road, off of Paris Road in Chalmette.
It will be distributed on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
until the food supply is depleted.

"The Humane Society of the United States was saddened to hear that animals
inland from the shoreline are also suffering from this disaster," said Julia
Breaux, The HSUS' Louisiana state director. "Hopefully, the donation from
Mars Petcare U.S. and the Pedigree Foundation and The Humane Choice Company
will help by providing pet owners the opportunity to continue caring for
their beloved animals."

St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro said, "While our commercial
fishermen are working to save their coastline from the oil spill, it is
important to support them in any way we can. Ensuring their pets' food is
not another burden on them is one way to help during this difficult time. We
thank the Humane Society for coordinating this generous donation."

This assistance is meant to help those in the fishing industry, so bring a
St. Bernard driver's license and some sort of documentation such as a
fishing license or dock occupational license. If you have any questions,
please call 278-1534.
