Ground Breaking on Mosquito Control Administrative Building and Garage

$1,284,887 project improves lab and storage facilities

With the beginning of pile driving just starting, St. Bernard Parish
President Craig P. Taffaro Jr. and Parish Council members held a Ground
Breaking to mark the start of construction on the Mosquito Control
Administrative Lab Building and Garages in Violet on Friday, June 25.

"This project is another step to getting all of our projects underway before
the fifth anniversary of Katrina," President Taffaro said at the event
celebrating the $1,284,887 construction project. "This is a quality of life
issue to improve

operations for our mosquito control department. Each of these celebrations
is a reminder that our parish continues to grow and recover day by day."

The Administrative Lab building will cost $569,410 and the garage to house
the specialized equipment used by the operators will cost $715,477. This
project, mostly funded by FEMA dollars, is another example of the parish
building better, smarter and stronger because the 1,382-square foot
administrative/lab building will be elevated to 16 feet, and the
2,970-square foot garage building is incorporating two separate buildings at
the Palmisano site into one.

The department is headed by David Rainey, a 36-year employee with St.
Bernard Parish Government and the new manager of Mosquito Control, and it
was headed by its longtime manager Wil Schulte, a 44-year employee, who just
retired.

This facility, expected to be completed by the end of the year, is being
relocated from Palmisano Boulevard, next to the Department of Public Works
to its new site at 3400 Stacie Drive in Violet.

RCL Architect LLC of Mandeville designed the project, and Braithwaite
Construction Co. of Meraux will construct the facility. Terry Lopez of Camp
Dresser & McKee Inc. is the project manager. The project is being overseen
by the St. Bernard Department of Recovery Director Michael Dorris, Jr. and
his staff. The St. Bernard Public Works Department and Water and Sewer
Department under Parish Acting Director of Public Works Logan Martin is
working on the project, as is the parish's Resident Inspector Gil Carlin.
