St. Bernard Parish government says there have been 31 oil sightings in
parish waters and on shorelines in the past two days, as oil from the BP
spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to spread.

Twenty-four of the sightings were of oil on marshes or shoreline; eight were
of oil in the water, the parish said. Also, a number of oil-covered birds
and dead birds have been reported, the parish said.

Cleanup task forces were deployed to the Chandeleur Islands Wednesday, where
oil was confirmed to be washing up on the shore.

When oil is spotted, the parish said, vessels are deployed to impacted areas
to put out boom. Skimming is also conducted where possible, the parish said.

The parish is also conducting tests on methods to remediate marshes that
become fouled with oil, the parish said.
