A levee improvement project in St. Bernard Parish will require the
re-routing of traffic on Louisiana 46 near Verret beginning Wednesday and
lasting through next March, the state Department of Transportation and
Development said.

As part of a massive post-Hurricane Katrina levee improvement program,
floodgates are being constructed across Louisiana 46 near Fire Station No.
10 in Verret, DOTD said. The floodgates, which are being constructed to an
elevation of 30 feet and are expected to be completed by next March, are
part of the agency's 100-year protection plan.

In Phase 1, which begins Wednesday and will last until late August, north
and southbound traffic will be limited to using the outside lanes while
crews construct temporary crossovers just north and south of the future
floodgates.

In Phase 2, which will be from August until January 2011, southbound traffic
will be re-routed to the northbound side through the construction zone.
Traffic each way will be reduced to a single lane.

In Phase 3, from January 2011 until March 2011, northbound traffic will be
re-routed to the southbound side through the construction zone. Traffic each
way will be reduced to a single lane.
