St. Bernard Parish Branch oil spill operations are up and running

 

Oil response activities were stood down at St. Bernard Parish Branch oil
spill operations Wednesday due to impending weather. Subsequently the
tropical system which was predicted to hit Louisiana dissipated and the
tropical storm warnings were canceled for the area Wednesday afternoon.
Operations are being stood back up this morning. Weather is still not
conducive to full operations, but vessels will begin returning to staging
areas today to prepare for deployment as soon as weather allows. 

 

The Unified Command of the St. Bernard Parish Branch along with Planning and
Operations personnel are involved in strategic planning activities today for
the resumption of response activities. As the focus of oil response
operations in St. Bernard Parish shift from surface oil to subsurface and
oiled marshes and shorelines, response asset needs will also change.
Planning and Operations will work together to plan and execute the response
strategy that is most appropriate for the current threats to our waters.

 

"It means the focus of our activity will shift from immediate or emergency
response to more of a recovery or restoration activity," St. Bernard Parish
President Craig Taffaro said. "In fact, we're working through a
comprehensive transition plan. It's being discussed this week."
