St. Bernard Parish to hold several community events to mark the fifth
anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

Across St. Bernard Parish, several community events will mark the fifth
anniversary of Hurricane Katrina during the week leading up to August 29 as
residents come together to celebrate how far the parish has come in its
recovery.

"As we approach the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, it is important
to remember those who lost their lives, but it is a time also to celebrate
as a community the successes of our growth and recovery of our parish over
the last five years," said St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro,
Jr.

On the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 27, St Bernard Parish Government will hold
a series of dedications at recovery construction projects completed by
parish government. The St. Bernard Parish Government Recovery Tour will
begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Islenos Museum Complex in St. Bernard Village, and
it will end at 4:30 p.m. at the Sigur Civic Center Auditorium in Chalmette,
with stops at a sampling of projects highlighted during the tour.

There will be a cabbage ball tournament at Val Riess Park, Phase II in
Chalmette on Saturday, August 28 starting at 1 p.m. Teams are set with
government agencies and recovery partners. The public should come celebrate
and join in the festivities to cheer on various government agencies. The day
will include music and several activities.

The annual Katrina Commemoration Ceremony will take place Sunday, August 29
at 8:30 a.m. in Shell Beach at the site of the Katrina Memorial. On Sunday
afternoon, there will be a Praise and Worship Concert at the Sigur Civic
Center Auditorium in Chalmette from 2 to 5 p.m.

In addition to St. Bernard Parish Government's events, the St. Bernard
School Board will hold its annual Day of Reflection Breakfast the morning of
Friday, August 27 at 8:30 a.m. at Chalmette High School, Lacoste Campus, 9th
Grade Academy Gym, 1101 E. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette.

Call Shelby Harrison at the School Board office for ticket information about
the breakfast at 301-2000. Tickets are $10 a piece and are first come first
serve.

Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church in Chalmette will hold its Katrina Memorial
Mass on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

All parish government Katrina events are free.
