LDEQ reports no evidence of oil on nets or shrimp catch

St. Bernard Parish hosts a successful Gulf Oil Spill Expo

Jeff Dauzat from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality reports
that activities to monitor shrimp trawling vessels were successful on
Thursday. Vessels were tracked in the Chandeleur Sound, Lake Pontchartrain
and the Rigolets. "Four shrimp vessels were monitored while they were
unloading their nets," says Dauzat. "There was no indication of oil in any
of the nets or on the shrimp catch. We'll be going out again tomorrow and
will be assessing lower Breton Sound, Lake Borgne, Lake Catherine and
Mississippi Sound."

A successful Open House Expo hosted by St. Bernard Parish, BP and the Coast
Guard was held at the Sigur Civic Center Grand Ballroom on Thursday evening.
The Expo featured experts and representatives from BP Claims, Wildlife and
Fisheries, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, EPA, NOAA, USCG,
Dispersants, LA Spirit, Louisiana Department of Social Services, SNAP, LA
Work Force, OSHA, SBA, Alternative Response Technologies, Department of
Labor, and LSU Agricultural Center. Over 150 fishermen, their families and
members of local businesses and the community were able to meet one-on-one
with agency representatives to get some insight and answers to questions
regarding the Gulf oil disaster. St. Bernard President Craig Taffaro was in
attendance and provided some opening remarks for the Expo. "If you walk away
tonight not knowing any more than you walked in with then it really wasn't a
good use of time. Please take advantage of this time to get your questions
answered," Taffaro said.
