Chalmette Refining issues a claims number for the incident: 1-877-657-2833

 

Chalmette Refining LLC had an electrical outage Monday around 2 a.m. that
resulted in several units of its refinery being shut down, St. Bernard
Parish Fire Chief Thomas Stone said. The incident resulted in at least 2,000
pounds of spent catalyst being released over a large area of Chalmette and
Arabi, Stone said. 

 

St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, Jr. said he is in contact
with Wil Hinson of Chalmette Refining. The refinery has issued a toll-free
claims number: 1-877-657-2833. Residents can clean substance as it is not
harmful but citizens should photograph the presence on their property before
cleaning.

 

The refinery issued a Material Safety Data Sheet to local authorities saying
the release is not harmful, but Stone said it is nuisance. Spent catalyst is
a very sandy, light-colored material that is a by-product of the refining
process. 

 

Stone said many in the area woke to find their neighborhoods looked like a
sand storm blew a sandy, powdery substance on everything including vehicles
and structures. The Fire Department worked to map the affected area, Stone
said. The State Police's HazMat Division and the state Department of
Environmental Quality were notified.
