St. Bernard Parish holds dedication for Violet Park No. 2 playground
equipment Saturday, Sept. 18 and Community Volunteer Day to prep site will
be Saturday, Sept. 11

Playground equipment made possible through donations from the Power 102.9
radio station and proceeds from the Always Home Dance

St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, Jr. and the Parish Council
will dedicate the new playground equipment at Violet Park No. 2 on Saturday,
Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. The Power 102.9 Posse, which donated nearly $10,000,
will join officials and citizens for the event.

Additionally, St. Bernard will host a community volunteer day at Violet Park
No. 2 Saturday, Sept. 11 at 9 a.m. to lay the foundation for the site and to
spread mulch for the playground equipment. Needed equipment will be
provided. Anyone interested in participating should contact the Recreation
Department at 278-4295. The company providing the playground will erect the
playground in time for the dedication ceremony.

In June, Power 102.9 radio station teamed with House of Blues to hold a
benefit hip hop concert for St. Bernard Parish, and Big Abe and LeBron "LBJ"
Joseph of Power 102.9 FM presented a check for $9,988.65 to President
Taffaro to fund playground equipment at Violet Park No. 2.

Officials with Citadel Broadcasting's radio station KKND-FM (Power 102.9)
said the radio chain wanted to do something to help the youth in the
communities affected by the BP Oil Spill. Because two of the radio cluster's
broadcast towers rest in St. Bernard Parish, Joseph, who is the KKND Program
Director, said he thought it was natural to use the radio's resources to
help.

Taffaro said the parish is so grateful to Power 102.9-FM for all of the
station's support because it is important to remember the young people are
affected by the crisis as well.

Taffaro invited citizens to choose the design because he wanted the
community's input for this addition to Violet Park No. 2, part of the St.
Bernard Recreation Department which has already been dramatically upgraded
through FEMA funding to address repairs and renovations since Hurricane
Katrina. Proceeds from the recent Always Home Dance at the Sigur Civic
Center Grand Ballroom will cover the remaining balance of the cost of the
playground equipment. The Always Home Dance is organized by a citizens'
committee which President Taffaro is a member of that annually raises money
for recreation programs.
