St. Bernard Parish nearly ready to open Aycock Barn/Open Air Market

State of the art facility to be part of a revitalization effort in Historic
Old Arabi

St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, Jr. and the Parish Council
are expected to hold a grand opening ceremony within the next 30 days at the
Aycock Barn/Open Air Market in the historic district of Old Arabi.

The project at 409 Aycock Street involves $2.1 million of FEMA funded work
to convert the Aycock Barn into a family-friendly open air market complete
with vendors and pop-up fountains for the children.

"This facility stands as a testament to the quality of life and standard of
excellence that St. Bernard residents have long deserved," President Taffaro
said. The facility is meant to be used for public gatherings and
neighborhood concerts. Additionally, the facility has interior space that
also can be used for small gatherings.

"It is part of a grand plan of revitalization of Old Arabi in partnership
with the St. Bernard School Board's redevelopment of Maumus School and a
walking path that will take residents and visitors to the historic sites in
Old Arabi," he said. It will probably play host to the interim St. Bernard
Tourism and Visitors' Center.

The facility boasts amenities such as an ice machine, electric outlets and
stainless steel sink sanitary area for vendor support in an aesthetically
stunning building. It also includes data lines so vendors will be able to
accept credit or debit cards for payment.

The facility incorporated the use of historic bricks that were in storage
and were once part of the De Le Ronde Ruins. The bricks are on the front
walkway and make up the columns of the feature fountain. The plans are to
use Community Development Block Grant funds for future expansion efforts.
