Local veterans' office in St. Bernard to be established

St. Bernard Parish Government plans to partner with the Louisiana Department
of Veterans Affairs to establish a local office in St. Bernard and share
expenses for staff for the office that officials hope to open in early 2011.

"This is a further commitment to the veterans of our community by the state
and parish," St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, Jr. said.
Currently, veterans' benefits in St. Bernard top $6 million annually.
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Lane Carson praised the President's Office and
Parish Council for their partnership at a recent program where as
dignitaries presented the Louisiana Veterans Honor Medals to those who have
served.

Council Chairman Wayne J. Landry sponsored a resolution that passed
unanimously at this week's council meeting supporting the partnership.

This partnership comes on the heels of the Parish Council and parish
administration teaming to support state public health services in St.
Bernard during state level budget cuts that will see some reduction in the
services offered until alternative providers are identified. The parish is
currently housing the state's St. Bernard Health Unit in a facility at the
St. Bernard Parish Government Complex at 8201 W. Judge Perez Drive in
Chalmette.
