[StBernard] St. Bernard Parish should not reignite housing battle: An editorial

I am reminded this is a re-election year - and certainly let's put one's
re-election before what's best for the entire parish. Every good general
knows when the battle is lost. Sure, it's fine if you want to fight to the
death - just don't drag everyone else with you. Thus the saying "live to
fight another day." Apparently parish government leaders haven't heard of
that old saying.

St. Bernard parish is learning an age old wisdom here - that you can't take
the devil's money and expect there to be no catches. No one had a problem
accepting the Fed's hundreds of millions of dollars after Katrina, but now
the recipients want to dictate the terms. It doesn't work that way with the
Feds. The best all can hope for is a new GOP administration is elected 2012
and St. Bernard will fare better with them since HUD takes its marching
orders from the White House.
