St. Bernard President Craig Taffaro's President's Challenge won by Sheriff's
Office team 

Event held in conjunction with the 2011 HT Professional Redfish Series
Tournament 

 

The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Team, hosted by Chief Deputy Sheriff James
Pohlmann with Brent Bourgeois and Ricky Jackson won St. Bernard Parish
President Craig P. Taffaro Jr.'s President's Challenge Fishing Tournament on
the final day of the Redfish Cup in Chalmette.

 

Snagging two redfish that weighed in at 10.87 pounds, Pohlmann's team bested
the fishermen on three other teams that were hosted by President Taffaro,
St. Bernard Parish Councilman Wayne Landry and New Orleans Mayor Mitch
Landrieu. The teams cast off early Saturday morning and returned for the
Saturday afternoon weigh-in at the Crawfish Festival, just before the
weigh-in for the professional fishermen.

 

For the President's Challenge, the winning team gets bragging rights for a
year and a traveling trophy Redfish Cup trophy handmade of hand beaten metal
by local artist Luis Colmenares of Art Metal Studios. 

 

Building on successful professional fishing tournaments held in St. Bernard
Parish since 2004, this was the first stop for the Academy Sports and
Outdoors HT Professional Redfish Series bringing to town 30 teams from the
Gulf South Region. This year the tournament was held in conjunction with the
Louisiana Crawfish Festival with live weigh-ins on Thursday, March 24 and
Friday, March 25 before the championship weigh in on Saturday, March 26.

 

For the tournament, St. Bernard welcomed 30 teams that included some of the
best professional anglers from all over the South including Florida,
Georgia, Texas and Louisiana. Texas anglers Jeff Steckler and Jimmy Lloyd
won first place at the Chalmette event for a first place prize of $25,000.
Lake Charles anglers, Nick Poe and Lee Daughdrill, finished second place,
taking home $10,000.00 for their efforts. Third place went to St. Bernard
team of Charlie Thomason. Third through 10th place finishers all took home
prize checks of $2,500.
