St. Bernard Parish holds a four-phase hurricane preparedness exercise

Residents needing evacuation assistance should register with parish

The St. Bernard Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, in
conjunction with the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency
Preparedness, the Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Chapter of the
American Red Cross, the Louisiana Department of Children and Family
Services, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, the U.S. Coast
Guard, the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office, and all St. Bernard Parish
Government Essential Personnel participated in four exercises surrounding
the state of readiness for this year's hurricane season.

One exercise tested the ability for the Emergency Operations Center to
conduct the necessary coordination with local, regional, state and federal
partners to provide multi-agency support and coordination during a
hurricane. The second and third exercise tested both the parish's
evacuation pick-up point procedures, and the establishment of the parish's
Point-to-Point Shelter arrangements. This will ensure that all parish
residents that require evacuation assistance will be sheltered together and
not spread out through the state shelter management program. The final
exercise tested the ability for the parish government to establish an
off-site location to create redundancy for the continuity of operations
during an emergency until normal operations can be continued.

"At the direction of Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, St. Bernard has once
again gone the extra mile to ensure the residents of St. Bernard receive the
care and consideration they deserve during these times of heightened stress
and anxiety," said David Dysart, Director of Homeland Security and Emergency
Preparedness. "The residents of St. Bernard can sleep easier knowing the
President Taffaro has ensured all aspects of Emergency Preparedness have met
the high standard of quality and professionalism established by this
administration."

With hurricane season under way, it is important that residents register
with the St. Bernard Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness
if they have special medical needs and need evacuation assistance as well as
those lacking reliable transportation to evacuate. Those needing assistance
must register annually. To register, call 504-278-4322, 504-278-4268 or
504-278-4236.
