St. Bernard Seafood & Farmers Market to Celebrate a Family Fun Fourth of
July this Saturday, July 2

Watermelon Eating Contest at 10:30 a.m. and holiday-related children's
activities offered

The St. Bernard Seafood & Farmers Market will be open this Saturday, July 2,
so plan to come by and pick up some berries for shortcake, plenty of veggies
for salad, and fresh shrimp. Come enjoy the wonderful summer weather, meet
neighbors, experience great entertainment and do one-stop shopping for your
Fourth of July celebration!

Join the family fun celebration with the first annual Fourth of July
Watermelon Eating Contest at 10:30 am. Market patrons will have the
opportunity to indulge in large, juicy watermelons and compete for prizes
offered by the Market. There will be a kids' and adults' eating competition
to see who can eat the fastest, and there will be a Seed Spitting
Competition held right after the Watermelon Eating Contest. There will be
plenty for the children to do this Saturday, including making ice cream in a
bag, Fourth of July craft activities, and outdoor games. Bring the bathing
suits to cool off in the pop-up fountains at the facility.

Local musical talent - Mike Darby & the House of Cards - will entertain
market patrons with a unique sound that crosses cultural lines and moves
audiences. Their bluesy New Orleans rock sounds are sure to get visitors
dancing. In addition to the great entertainment, market patrons will be able
to enjoy some homemade jambalaya from Riverbend Bistro, a great
accompaniment to the other fine fresh offerings at the Market.

Each Saturday, the St. Bernard Seafood & Farmers Market provides fresh food
and fresh ideas to help local residents improve their quality of life. The
market has an array of selections to choose from this weekend including
locally grown produce, fresh shrimp and fish, delicious baked goods, jams
and pickled goods, fresh herbs, organic blueberries, and homemade hot-sauce.
Additionally, the Farmers Market features local artisans selling their
handmade original crafts.

While visiting the Market, receive some gardening tips and other information
about responsible stewardship of the environment from the Master Gardeners
informational booth. Also exhibiting at the Market this weekend is the
Rebuilding Together New Orleans organization, a continuing volunteer effort
to improve the quality of life of low income homeowners through home repair
and revitalization of New Orleans' neighborhoods. Additionally, the
organization will be promoting The ReUse District, a unique collaboration
between nonprofits, businesses and community organizations who aim to
increase the appreciation and accessibility of reused materials in nearby
New Orleans neighborhoods. There's lots of community information available
this weekend so come on by and learn how you can make a difference in your
own backyard.

The market will operate every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through
October, rain or shine. It will be geared toward local farmers and fishermen
so they can sell their products to the local community. However, spaces will
be available for local artisans who specialize in handmade arts and crafts.
Those who would like to sell flowers, bedding plants and seeds also are
welcomed. Consumers or vendors interested in learning more about the market
can email Ashley Proze at market at sbpg.net <mailto:market at sbpg.net> or call
(504) 355-4442.
