St. Bernard Salutes America 27th Annual Celebration draws crowd of more than
3,000



More than 3,000 visitors enjoyed the St. Bernard Salutes America 27th Annual
Celebration at Torres Park and the Community Playground with live music by 5
Finger Discount, children's activities, good food, the first, annual Hot Dog
Eating Contest and the finale of the spectacular fireworks show. The event
began with the annual Patriotic Program sponsored by the St. Bernard
Business & Professional Women's Club.

The BPW annually holds a bell ringing ceremony at the replica of the Liberty
Bell that was presented as a USA Bicentennial gift to the citizens of St.
Bernard Parish by the members of the Business & Professional Women's Club.
The bell fund raising drive was spearheaded by Club Charter Members Olga
Dugas and the late Louise Gorbaty.



The first annual Hot Dog Eating Contest netted two winners Kevin Hezeau and
Tim Griffin who each ate 11 hot dogs in seven minutes. For their efforts,
each went home with a cash prize and a trophy.



The St. Bernard Parish Government Events Committee, which organizes the
