BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Housing Finance Agency has lost a federal subsidized-housing contract worth $1 million per year to a Texas-based company.

The state is working on a legislative mandate to consolidate several housing agencies. The new law dissolves the LHFA on June 30, 2012.

State Sen. Lydia Jackson, D-Shreveport, says she is concerned the law puts the state at risk of losing such contracts. But Commissioner of Administration Paul Rainwater says LHFA lost because of poor performance, rather than concern over the reorganization.

The agency has administered the Section 8 housing program in Louisiana since 2003, but last week the contract was awarded to the Southwest Housing Compliance Corp., which administers the program in Texas and Arkansas.

LHFA is appealing the Department of Housing and Urban Development's decision.

I believe it was LHFA which awarded the credits to Provident Realty.
