Ground breaking for $4.3 million St. Bernard Parish Courthouse Square

A host of local, state and federal officials gathered to mark the ground
breaking at the new Courthouse Square that will be located directly behind
the historic St. Bernard Courthouse.

St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, Jr. praised all the
government partners who worked together on this project that will provide
space for the Assessor's Office, the Clerk of Court, the Public Defenders'
Board, the Sheriff's Office and the St. Bernard Parish Government. The
project is a collaborative project that brought together all facets of the
courthouse, parish government FEMA and Governor's Office of Homeland
Security and Emergency Preparedness.

There has been special attention given to detail on this project because the
two-story elevated building is designed to complement the 34th District
Historic Courthouse. Among other issues, new innovative technology - auger
cast pile foundation - is being used that is specifically designed to reduce
vibration to the historic courthouse building.

"We think this building will be a great addition and complete the renovation
to bring all operations of the court and sheriff's office back together,"
Taffaro said.

The building's construction should cost about $4,266,000. The contractor is
FH Myers Construction Corp. The project manager and project engineer is Kyle
Associates, LLC. The design architect is Fauntleroy, Latham, Weldon, Barre'
Architects. Stacey Danner is the project manager for CDM and Dennis Tauzin
has oversight over all FEMA-funded recovery projects for St. Bernard. Rick
Stierwald of the St. Bernard Parish Department of Public Works is the
resident inspector. President Taffaro thanked all of the partners as well as
the government employees who have a hand in managing the project including
Chief Administrative Officer Dave Dysart, St. Bernard Parish Recovery
Director Michael Dorris, Jr. and his staff, and Public Works Director
Kenneth Odinet and his staff.
