Spring Clean Sweep completed: nearly 170 truckloads of trash removed from
residences

St. Bernard Parish Government Public Works Road crew workers fanned out and
picked up trash at the curb from general spring cleaning throughout the
parish over the last few weeks during the third Annual Spring Clean Sweep.

"Our guys have done awesome in their assistance to the residents in keeping
the parish clean," said St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, Jr.,
who said the event will be an annual one.

During the event that ran for about a month, workers picked up trash that
wouldn't normally be taken from residences. It is a good way to give people
the opportunity to clean out their sheds and attics without worrying how to
get the trash hauled away, Taffaro said.

This effort focused only on trash generated from general cleaning. It did
not include demolition or construction debris, and no household hazardous
waste items were picked up. The sweep, just over a month long, began in the
eastern end of the parish and workers finished in Arabi.

Assistant Public Works Director Louie Pomes said his crews did a good job
and hauled everything from mattresses to sofas and everything in between
taking away more than 166 trash truck loads in 18-yard trucks. That means
nearly 3,000 yards of trash were hauled away.

Pomes said he was pleased with the response.

"It took us a little longer than expected because people's volume of trash
that was placed between the sidewalk and the street was more than we
expected," Pomes said.

Even though the sweep is completed, Pomes said residents can still take
advantage of the parish's two transfer stations to bring their trash. To use
the facilities, you must be a St. Bernard resident and show a photo id. The
transfer stations only accept residential debris, and commercial dumping is
allowed. The stations are open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
One is located on Paris Road north of the levee on the left, and the other
is next to the EJ Gore Pumping Station on E. Judge Perez Drive in Poydras.
