St. Bernard Parish officials celebrate completion of the Bayou 8 Canal
Project

St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, Jr. and other local, state
and federal officials celebrated the completion of repairs at eight canal
crossings known as the Bayou 8 Canal Project. As part of the recovery
efforts, repairs and replacements to eight canal crossings were made with
FEMA funding at locations that experienced scouring, erosion, and material
loss from Hurricane Katrina's winds and flooding.

"This project is critical to these neighborhoods that need safe and reliable
crossings," President Taffaro said. "I want to thank our partners with FEMA
and the state for helping make this project happen."

District E Parish Councilman Fred Everhardt agreed.

"I want to thank FEMA for partnering with St. Bernard for making this
possible, and I want to thank the parish administration for all their hard
work," Everhardt said. "It's just another stepping stone to our recovery."

Mike Hunnicutt, FEMA Deputy Section Chief, Hazard Mitigation, was on hand to
mark the project's completion.

"We're happy to be part of another successful recovery project, and we thank
St. Bernard Parish and President Taffaro for being excellent recovery
partners through this process," Hunnicutt said.

In some locations, as in Heights, full replacement was made of the culvert
pipe, roadway, and embankment material. In addition, improvements were made
to reduce the consequences of future hurricanes. These mitigation
improvements include channel restoration around the culvert and the addition
of rip rap material to reduce future erosion and scouring caused by
flooding. Other locations, such as Russell and Francis Carroll, had
embankment improvements along with culvert extensions.

Here is a list of where the repairs were done to make the street crossings
secure and safe:

. Heights at Bayou Terre Aux Boeufs

. Russell at Bayou Terre Aux Boeufs

. Francis Carroll at Bayou Terre Aux Boeufs

. Linda Lou at Bayou Terre Aux Boeufs

. Riverbend at Reunion Canal

. Torres at Judge Perez

. Kelly at Bayou Terre Aux Boeufs

. Suzi at Bayou Terre Aux Boeufs

The construction cost $380,964. The contractor was Command Construction LLC,
and the firm in charge of architecture and engineering was JJG, a Jacobs
Company. Shannon Dotson is this project's manager for CDM and Dennis Tauzin
has oversight over all FEMA-funded recovery projects for St. Bernard.
President Taffaro thanked all of the partners as well as the government
employees who have a hand in managing the project including Chief
Administrative Officer Dave Dysart, St. Bernard Parish Recovery Director
Michael Dorris, Jr. and his staff, and Public Works Director Kenneth Odinet
and his staff, including Diana Goin who is the project's resident inspector.
