Heroes of Katrina blog radio show is titled: Craig Taffaro: St Bernard
Parish President. Reflections of what was. What's to be.and all in between

Craig P. Taffaro, Jr., a lifelong resident of St. Bernard, has served as St.
Bernard Parish President since January 2008. Since he became president of
St. Bernard, he has led the Gulf Coast in recovery projects. He is a
recognized expert who has repeatedly been requested to give testimony to
Congress and the Louisiana State legislature on recovery funding and
disaster management. He is Vice Chairman of the regional Planning
Commission, the Chairman of the St. Bernard Parish Home Mortgage Authority,
and the Chairman of the St. Bernard Housing, Redevelopment, and Quality of
Life Commission. Previously, he served as District D Parish Councilman in
1996-2000 and 2004-2008.

As Parish President, the Taffaro Administration has moved this parish
forward in its $1 billion in federal recovery and growth efforts for St.
Bernard Parish. That includes more than 50 miles of streets, new fire
stations, gyms, parks, public buildings, drainage stations, sewer plants,
and levee protection. Specific milestones in leading the Gulf Coast Recovery
over the last two years include the closure of the MRGO, reestablishing
community events and creating partnerships with the local business
community, the state and federal delegations, the Governor's Office and
FEMA. Taffaro joined the metropolitan leadership in addressing the BP oil
spill in efforts to protect critical fisheries and marshlands and called on
the local fishing fleet to lead the response.

Additionally, believing the recovery is more than repairing roads and
buildings, he worked to expand community offerings. Among some of the events
he created and organized, President Taffaro established Concert in the Park
series, St. Bernard Always Home Dance, Christmas Cash Back program and First
Lady and President Easter Egg Hunt. He chaired local Fleur-de-Lis District
Fund Raiser for Boy Scouts of America and created St. Bernard's first
Seafood and Farmer Market Reestablished Redfish Cup. In terms of his
community activities, he is a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in
Violet, Oyster Festival Fair Committee, Kiwanis Club, St. Bernard Chamber,
Jumonville Plantation Homeowners Association, United Commercial Fishermen
Association, Chalmette Track Club, Advisory Committee for Youth Rescue
Initiative's St. Bernard Chapter, ULL and USM Alumni Associations and Lambda
Chi Alpha Fraternity. He is a board member of American Red Cross and
Irish-Italian-Isleno Community Parade and former Board member of St. Bernard
Parish Battered Women's Shelter. Also, he is an active Recreation Department
Coach and Adult League member.

President Taffaro, who lives in Meraux, has been married to Debbie Curry for
the last 25 years. They have eight children. He spent over 20 years as a
Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
He also held a Faculty Appointment in Psychology at Nunez Community College,
was the Founder of Straight Street Group Home and Non-Profit Counseling
Organization. He helped establish and served as the Treatment Director of
St. Bernard Parish Drug Court Programs. Taffaro also served as Assistant
Principal at Archbishop Hannan High School in Meraux, where he established a
peer counseling program and was an Assistant Coach for the District
Championship Season in Football and was Head Coach and Coach of the Year for
Track and State Runner-up in Cross Country. President Taffaro graduated from
Holy Cross High School, earned a Bachelor's Degree from University of
Southwestern Louisiana and a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from
the University of Southern Mississippi.

Author Cary Black released his epoch novel of American heroism called
Katrina: A Freight Train Screamin'. The book tells the real story of the
worst natural disaster to hit the United States. It chronicles the stories
of the people who were on the ground savings lives, the people who were
reaching out to rescue the millions of abandoned animals, and the people who
survived and heroically came back, dug in, and rebuilt their lives from the
chaos. The stories reflect the thoughts of regular folks having to fight
for their lives and finding heroism in their souls as they struggled to deal
with the enormity of the storm.

The book tells these peoples stories in a way that makes the reader realize
how far reaching the depth of this tragedy was. But his intent was not to
just tell the story of the magnitude and extent of destruction Katrina
caused -it was to show the bravery of the everyday people who live in the
Gulf Coast area. The book can be ordered at:
