Senator Won't Contest Opponent's Residency

Crowe, Hutter Cleared For Fall Election Showdown

CHALMETTE, La. -- A Louisiana state senator will not challenge the residency
of a challenger hoping to take his seat in this fall's election.

Sen. A.G. Crowe had until Thursday afternoon to file paperwork seeking to
disqualify state Rep. Nita Hutter from the ballot.

Hutter -- who cannot run for re-election to the House of Representatives
because of term limits -- qualified to run against the incumbent senator in
District 1, which encompasses St. Bernard Parish and parts of some
neighboring parishes.

The WDSU I-Team has reported that Hutter's Chalmette home has not been
occupied since Hurricane Katrina, and that she has spent most of her time in
recent years at a house she purchased in Old Metairie -- well outside her
current district and the senate district she seeks to represent.

Crowe told WDSU earlier this month he was considering a challenge, but his
campaign has decided not to pursue it.
Hutter has said she lived in a trailer on her Chalmette property after the
storm and is currently rebuilding the home, intending to move back to it in
the next few months. Last week, Hutter's campaign told WDSU she sacrificed
rebuilding her own property so she could focus on constituent concerns.
