St. Bernard Parish gets additional funding for road repairs

St. Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, Jr., who serves as the Vice
Chairman of the Regional Planning Commission, has been able to secure more
than $4.6 million through the RPC and the state Department of Transportation
and Development for repairs to roads deemed ineligible for FEMA dollars.

"Once again, this shows the value of partnerships," Taffaro said. "When one
partnering agency couldn't secure the funding, another partnering agency
did."

FEMA rules don't allow funding for repairs on any roads that used Federal
Highway Administration money for design or construction. The majority of
roads affected by this distinction are in District A with some street
repairs to be done as well in District B and District C.

"This is been a three-year long effort to secure funding for important
repairs to Friscoville and Mehle avenues," District A Councilman Ray Lauga
said. "I would like to thank the Regional Planning Commission and the
Department of Transportation for stepping up and assisting St. Bernard
Parish."

Councilman George Cavignac, who represents District B, said, "I'm glad we
were able to secure this money to further our recovery along, not just in my
district but across the entire parish."

District C Councilman Kenny Henderson agreed.

"This work is badly needed, and I'm glad the funding is there to get the
issues on Palmisano and other streets addressed."

The streets that will be repaired include Friscoville Avenue, Mehle Avenue
and Aycock Street in Arabi, as well as parts of Patricia Street in Arabi and
Chalmette. Additionally, work will be done on West Genie Street, Packenham
Drive and Palmisano in Chalmette.
