And to think all this time I've wasted hanging out in Lowe's on the chance

Places such as Chalmette, La.; Emporia, Va.; and Old Bridge, N.J., will be
losing Lowe's Cos. Inc. stores within a month.

Mooresville-based Lowe's says it is closing 20 underperforming stores, some
of which ceased operation over the weekend. The remainder will be shuttered
within a month.

None of the stores to be closed are in the Carolinas. Here's a complete list
of the Lowe's stores that are closing.

"Closing stores is never easy, given the impact on hard-working employees
and local communities," Robert Niblock, Lowe's chairman, president and chief
executive, says in a news release. "However, we have an obligation to make
tough decisions when necessary to improve profitability and strengthen our
financial position."

Lowe's also is trimming the number of stores it expects to open in 2012 by
at least half to 15 stores. For 2011, the company is on track to open 25
stores.

Lowe's (NYSE:LOW) operates 1,725 stores in North America. It is the
second-largest home-improvement retailer behind The Home Depot Inc.
(NYSE:HD), which is based in Atlanta.
