Chalmette -- A driver's blackout led to traffic delays and a power outage in
parts of Chalmette.

A news release from the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office says a driver blacked
out due to an apparent medical condition as he was traveling on Paris Road,
around 2:40 p.m. Monday. He crashed into a utilty pole at East Moreau
Street and Paris, causing the outage. Several parked vehicles on East
Moreau were also struck but none of their drivers were reported injured.

The driver was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Meantime, three lanes of Paris Road were closed from La. 46 to Judge Perez
Drive. Only a southbound lane of Paris was open as Entergy crews repaired
power lines damaged in the accident. Authorities were not sure how soon the
lanes would be re-opened.

A report from Entergy says about 590 customers are affected by the power
outage, and it may be 12:30 Tuesday morning before all service is restored.
