History of Diseases and Their Treatment to be Discussed at Nunez Community
College

Did you know that New Orleans was given the nickname "Necropolis of the
South" during the late 18th and 19th centuries? Do you know what a
necropolis is?

You will get the answer to those questions during the next session of the
Nunez Community College History Lecture Series scheduled for Monday,
November 7th in the college auditorium.

Dr. Christina Vella will discuss the history of diseases and their
treatments during that time, including the factors that gave the New Orleans
area that nickname. Her presentation is called "Fevers and Leeches".

Vella is no stranger to the popular Nunez series, according to Dr. Curtis
Manning, Nunez associate professor of history and founder of the 10-year-old
program.

"Dr. Vella has been one of our most beloved lecturers with topics including
Louisiana writers, women's history, the Baroness of Pontalba, and the Czech
resistance in World WAR II," Manning said.

Vella, who earned her Ph.D. in European and US history from Tulane, has been
a history professor for more than 25 years and now devotes most of her time
to writing. She frequently serves as a consultant and writer for the US
Department of State Curatorial Division.

The lecture begins at 7 p.m. with a wine and cheese reception starting at
6:30 p.m. All lectures are free and open to the general public.

Exactly what is a necropolis? It is a large, elaborate cemetery. For more
information contact Dr. Manning at (504) 278-6295 or visit the Nunez website
