Experience "Hollywood on the Bayou" at Chalmette Movies

By Chris Henson, New Orleans Indie Movie Examiner
The New Orleans film industry has been getting a tremendous amount of
attention lately, and for good reason. With big name films like Green
Lantern already released, 21 Jump Street, Battleship, Abraham Lincoln:
Vampire Hunter, GI Joe II, Lay the Favorite all coming soon, and Quentin
Tarantino's Django Unchained, the sci-fi adaptation Ender's Game, Tom Hanks
in Maersk Alabama, and the Will Ferrell/Zach Galifianakis comedy Dog Fight
all about to start shooting, film and television production in New Orleans
and Louisiana has been on a tear lately.

With all the focus on recent growth, it is easy to overlook the state's rich
and lengthy cinematic past. Easy Rider, sex, lies, and videotape, Steel
Magnolias, JFK, and Miller's Crossing are just some of the films made in
Louisiana over the years and there are many, many more that can not be
ignored. With that in mind, two local "Film Accessory Researchers" - Ed and
Susan Poole - have made it their goal to make sure modern-day filmgoers "do
not forget Louisiana Film History."

Authors Ed and Susan Poole started out in the mid-1970s with movie
memorabilia collecting - buying, selling, and owning retail store. Together
they wrote the first reference book on the poster collecting hobby in 1997
called Collecting Movie Posters. After closing their retail store in 2000,
they turned exclusively to research. Since that time, they have worked
tirelessly to build numerous major reference sites and published numerous
reference books.

The Pooles specialize in film accessory information that is hard to find,
such as tracking lithographers/printers, poster artists, logos, NSS
documentation, movie still production codes and histories, with a special
dedication to preserving the information before it is gone. They have been
mentioned in countless film magazines and articles and even served as expert
witnesses in four major trials. So needless to say, Ed and Susan know their
stuff.

With the release of their 11th reference book, Hollywood on the Bayou,
theses dedicated researchers turned their meticulous attention to
documenting the almost 1,200 films that were either produced in or set in
Louisiana. On the relevance of the Louisiana film industry, the Pooles
explain:

"Movies produced in Louisiana can depict any time period in any location.
Even in the cases where movies were not actually filmed on location here,
film producers went to great lengths to recreate the look and feel of
authentic Louisiana . . . Louisiana's diversified topography, architecture,
ethnic diversity, and unique charm have brought star quality to many films."

on the left side of the article.

In promotion of Hollywood on the Bayou, Ed and Susan Poole will be on hand
at Chalmette Movies on Tuesday, December 13, 7:30 pm to discuss Louisiana
Film History, ranging from the years 1896 to 2010.

The lecture will be roughly one hour and will be both an oral discussion and
power point presentation. There will also be a Q&A session and book signing
immediately following the presentation. This wonderful and informative event
is presented FREE and open to the general public.

So come out and support Chalmette Movies (8700 W. Judge Perez Dr. just 6
miles from the French Quarter) by catching this excellent and educational
presentation, so that the theater can continue bringing interesting films
and events like this to the New Orleans-area. Visit the theater's website
for more information, directions, showtimes, and ticket prices.
