NEW ORLEANS - The Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center has sued
St. Bernard Parish to overturn a 2006 ordinance requiring a permit to rent a
house to someone else.

The lawsuit alleges that parish officials discouraged and refused to accept
applications for rental permits, threatening big fines and court
enforcement.

Parish President David Peralta released a statement Wednesday saying he
won't talk about it or a suit filed by the U.S. Justice Department until he
and the parish attorney have finished reviewing them.

Both suits were filed Tuesday in federal district court in New Orleans.

Parish President David Peralta released a statement Wednesday saying he
won't talk about it or a suit filed by the U.S. Justice Department until he
and the parish attorney have finished reviewing them.

The Justice Department accused the parish of fighting since late 2005 to
keep African-Americans from moving in.
