Days after the tax assessors of Louisiana stampeded toward the public trough
for a pay raise, Louisiana sheriffs have followed suit. Thanks are again due
to a sharp-eyed correspondent who saw the notice in a newspaper legal ad.

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO INTRODUCE BILL HLS 12RS-326

PUBLIC NOTICE - - - (NOTICE OF INTENTION TO INTRODUCE BILL HLS 12RS-326)
Public notice is hereby given, as provided by Section 13, Article III of the
Louisiana Constitution and R.S. 13:5521(E), that there will be introduced at
the forthcoming session of the Legislature of Louisiana, to be convened on
March 12, 2012, a bill relative to elected sheriffs; to require training of
elected sheriffs; to provide for a salary increase option for elected
sheriffs upon completion of mandated training and upon approval by the
legislature; and to provide for related matters. 4605152 - feb 14, 15 - 2t -
PUBLIC NOTICES/MISCELLANEOUS

Almost all Louisiana Sheriffs make a base salary of about $116
thousand/year, according to a source in the Sheriff's Association office.
That figure is derived from the salary of an Orleans Parish District Judge
($136,544), less $20 thousand.

However, we did find this legislation which adds back $12 thousand/year,
plus a 10% expense allowance. That puts the salary and expenses paid to
sheriffs in the $140 thousand/year range.
