ST.BERNARD PARISH, La. -- The death of a Chalmette man - initially believed
to be a drug overdose on July 26, 2011 - is now being classified as a
homicide, the first homicide in St. Bernard Parish since Jan. 2009,
according to St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Steve Cannizaro.

Michael Thore, 35, "apparently died by trauma which caused an artery to the
brain to rupture, St. Bernard Parish Coroner Dr. Bryan Bertucci said," a
statement from the sheriff's office said.

Prescription drugs were found in Thore's blood system, but during an autopsy
by the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office, it was determined the drugs were not
what caused Thore's death.

"Although it was initially suspected to be a drug overdose based on several
factors, the victim had lacerations to the face, possibly from a struggle,
(Sheriff-elect James) Pohlmann said," a statement from the sheriff's office
said.

Thore was found dead around 4 a.m. on July 26 at a home on Chalmette Drive,
where Thore had gone for the evening, said the sheriff's office.

"No arrest has been made but sheriff's detectives have interviewed several
subjects of interest, all of whom knew the victim. The investigation is
continuing," said the sheriff's office.
